THIS IS A VINTAGE TRIPLE-MEDALLION CAUCASIAN RUG, IT WAS MADE APPROXIMATELY 120 YEARS AGO (CIRCA 1890) IN FAKHRALY CAUCASIA.

This is a thouroughly exceptional 3 interlinked octagonal medallions in a Caucasian Rug. This delightful Fachralo Kazak rug was made approximately in the 3'rd Quarter 19'th Century.

It has the typical T-Meander border, interestingly and unusually, in this example the Shirvan Stripe links the T-Meanders, other examples of Fachralo rugs both prayer rugs and medallion rugs sometimes have this Shirvan Strip interlinking varicolored "T" Meanders. Further stripe borders have Lalle Abassi and Carnation Meanders.

It is hand-made from vegetably dyed wool and is superb in every way.

The wool is wonderful, shiny, soft and supple to the touch. The wool used in this rug was handcarded and handspun, only natural dyes made from Madder, Spurge, Euphorbia, Indigo, cochineal, pomegranate skins and walnut husks was used to dye the wool in this rug.

It is well documented that true 'old' Caucasian's are always wool on wool ie. the warp and weft is wool, as is the pile also, in construction such as this. Often they have an open field such as this, sometimes further decorated with a variety of different motifs.

This rug was made in the village of Fakhraly sometimes often referred to as Fachralo about 10 miles from the city of GENDJE in Azerbaijan, although it is also sometimes also described as being further west in Armenia. The following link gives some further information gleaned from a page of Spongobongo AKA Barry O'Connell's notes on Fachralo rugs, including a picture of a very similar rug.

And also to this link to Spongobongo, at the bottom of the page, which shows an example from Skinner Auctioneers in UK, of a Farchalo Kazak with 3 octagonal medallions:

This rug is like paper the construction is so fine, just magnificent, the prospective owner will have a museum quality treasure, in excellent condition. The 3-cord selvage, which alternates in color and short tasseling at each end of the rug are in excellent condition also.

This is an exceptional original KAZAK. The main border is a repeat leaf and calyx or also sometimes referred to as a cup and serrated leaf pattern. Mentioned in Fabio Formenton's treatise 1972 on Oriental Rugs true 'old' Kazak's are always wool on wool as this is, and they generally have an open field such as this. The 2 lock borders are Kufic script flanked by Shirvan stripes. This example of a Derbent has a red field containing 3 medallions resembling a Caucasian 8-pointed star within which is an arrow head cross. The selvage is 2 cord and both selvage and tasseling are in excellent condition.

In incredible example of Kazak this rug is like paper the construction is so fine, just magnificent, the prospective owner will have a museum quality treasure.

This is an exceptional original KAZAK with some interesting facets to it, the vine leaf border is seen in remarkably few KAZAKs now, together with a traditional KUBA border of carnations. It is well documented that true 'old' Kazak's are always wool on wool ie. the warp threads in construction as this is.

An incredible example of Kazak weaving this rug is solidly constructed and its weight is a testiment to that. The colors are beautiful, bright and harmonious, just magnificent, the prospective owner will have a museum quality treasure.

This is an exceptional 'seldom seen' in fact rare, example of an Armenian Karabagh Gallery rug.

There no examples on eBay or other web sites to compare this to, with the exception of already auctioned rugs through Christies or as described by JBOC. This pristine example has an Indigo field which is filled with boteh comprising vines and grapes (I may be corrected in this, there are so few examples to do any comparison to). The pile is superb, virtually unblemished, selvages and ends (tassling) are original, intact and in A1 condition. The main border is a repeat of Karabaugh (Caucasian) Shield Palmettes (examples of which can be seen in Peter F. Stone's guide, and in other superior references as E. Gans-Ruedin and Walter A. Hawley). The complexity of the main border may explain why the weaver chose to frame it with a simple red background and blue stripe. The Indigo background of the field is something seen in a number of Southern Caucasus rugs and very occasionally in Shirvan 'Boteh' also. There is some slight oxidation of the blue/black Indigo in a very few places, which in no way detracts from the total harmony or completeness of this work. There is little, if nothing to compare this offering to in the marketplace today, my price is superb in comparison to the few auctioned examples for comparison with.

The size of this rug is unusual and indicative of something which was commissioned or sanctioned by Czarist Russia in its domination of this region in all respects, those examples which exist today often faithfully example this within an inch or so. The prospective owner of this rug will have a significant piece of museum quality art, generally only held in private collections and museums.
